# Search Bar

The search bar (**{{icon:magnifying-glass size-4 inline-block align-text-center}} Search submissions (⌘K)**) takes up the most space on the Submissions Control Panel. To search your submissions for a keyword, phrase, or number, click anywhere inside the search bar or press **Command / ⌘ + K** to place your cursor in the search bar and begin typing. When no other filters are active, all available submissions will be included in your search results. For more specific searches, consider using additional [filter](submissions/managing_submissions#filters) options.

The search function compares your input to any field on a form and displays every submission containing that matching element as you typed it. The search is not case-sensitive, and matching portions will appear highlighted in blue on each result. 

By default, search results display with the most recently updated submission at the top, in descending order to the oldest submissions. *This sort order can be changed in [{{icon:bars-arrow-down size-5 inline-block align-text-center}} Sort Submissions](/submissions/managing-submissions/display-options#Sort Submissions) within the control panel.*

If you have other filters like **Status** or **Form** selected, the search will only produce results within those filtered categories. ***Be sure to clear your filters before starting a new search.***

**Common Search Bar "Gotchas"**

- **Punctuation is ignored** - Commas, decimals, apostrophes, and other punctuation are passed over in the search. For instance, searching for "36.00" will also produce results like 3600 or 3,600.
- **No highlighting visible on results** - This could happen because your display option is set to "Collapse All {{icon:arrows-pointing-in size-5 inline-block align-text-center}}" and the matching form element is only visible in expanded view. Select **Expand All {{icon:arrows-pointing-out size-5 inline-block align-text-center}}** from the submissions control panel, or click **{{icon:arrows-pointing-out size-5 inline-block align-text-center}} show more** in the individual submission's header. Another reason could be that the search result wasn't an exact match due to punctuation differences.
- **Clear your filters first!** :) The most common reason for unexpected search results is having an active filter you didn't realize was still set, which limits your search dataset.

### Submission Count 
When viewing the Submissions Control Panel with your filters cleared, the total number of submissions available to you displays at the right end of the search bar. This **Submission Count** represents all submissions you can access for searching and filtering. As you apply filters that exclude submissions, the count will update to reflect the narrowed results.

If your submission count shows "0," no submissions match your current criteria. Be sure to **Clear Filters** to ensure previously used filters aren't still active and limiting your results.

The submission count is also displayed at the top of the slide-out menu when accessing **Filters.**
